Advanced Whitewater Canoe Skills

washing machine canoe.jpg

Paddling an open canoe on harder whitewater is a fantastic test of our boat handling skills as well as our decision making and teamwork tactics. During this two day course we will match ourselves as a team against the river and aim to safely descend grade 3 and 3+ rapids with confidence and style.

This course is for the paddler who has some experience of running grade 3 and wants to explore making moves within this environment and dynamising their paddling to achieve some challenging attainments like smaller eddies or more complex lines.

On the first day we'll aim to start at a static grade 3 or a grade 2 river with some grade 3 set-piece rapids venue where we can dust off any cobwebs and sharpen our skills and prepare our mindsets for a true grade 3 river on day 2.

Strong teamwork is essential to paddling advanced whitewater and we'll take each rapid in turn, setting safety for each other, discussing lines and observing each others' performance.

By the end of the weekend we will have paddled multiple grade 3 rapids and have a solid understanding of how to achieve this as a supportive team.

During the two days we will look at:

  • Solidifying Core Skills

  • Adapting our mindset for advanced whitewater

  • Reading rapids and choosing lines

  • Precision and timing

  • Setting safety for our peers

  • Dynamic rescues

  • Alternatives to running the rapids we don't fancy
