Leaving Grade Two Behind

20230329_103950.jpg

Making the step from grade two to grade three can be daunting, particularly in canoes which are often less maneuvrable and prone to filling up with water and becoming unmanageable.

On this course we'll start by trying to be the best grade two paddler we can be, maximising the features and finessing our skills by making hard moves on easier water. This builds a familiar paddling literacy without the psycolgical pressures that more advanced water brings, allowing us to thrive and play without the consequences.

As the course progresses we'll look at slowly immersing ourselves in the more advanced environment; getting comfortable with the pressures that harder rapids bring by keeping things simple. As our confidence grows we'll start to complete the circle by applying the learned moves as appropriate on more complex rapids.

The aim is for you to go away with a deeper understanding of the tools at your disposal and the beginnings of how to apply them for more challenging tasks.

Skills you can expect to learn about and improve:

  • Maintaining stability entering and exiting faster flows.

  • Using the paddle for both power and support.

  • A greater understanding of power, precision and timing.

  • Slowing the boat to maintain control both with technique and tactics.

  • Making dynamic changes mid-move to acheive our attainments.
