Tandem Canoe Skills Developer

This unique course is for canoeists who paddle tandem and want to really understand boat control and the intracacies of sharing a boat with another person.
The couse will take place over two days. The first day we'll spend on a lake, unpacking existing skills, busting some myths and learning some tandem principles. We'll look at the roles and responsibilities of the bow and stern paddlers; what they need to do, when they need to do it and when they need to do nothing!
Throughout the day we'll learn how to move our boat through the water smoothly and efficiently; forwards, backwards, sideways, spinning round, wide turns, tight turns. All from the unique perspective of tandem using effective timing, communication and clear understanding of the effect that the bow and stern paddlers have.
The second day will take place on simple moving water where we'll look at a range of skills; entering, exiting and crossing a flow using ferry gliding and S-turns. Choosing lines down and navigating simple rapids, avoiding hazards and skilfully and stylishly moving around the river.
Over the two days you can expect to learn:
-
Understanding our interaction with the canoe, driving and stability.
-
Clarifying the principles of tandem and the role each paddler plays
-
Maximising efficiency in turning.
-
Using trim to help make things easier.
-
Entering, exiting and crossing a simple flow on the river
-
Understanding and choosing a line down simple rapids.
-
Choosing how to outfit a canoe according to our plans and the environment.
